Tony and lessons in diplomacy

I listened to Tony sitting on the war wagon before the race and I might have
missed it.  Did he actually apologize for anything?  All I heard was him using
the same, tired old excuse that "Im very competitive by nature so that gives
me the right to go nose-to-nose with Gary Nelson."  Arguing your case is one
thing, having to be pulled away from the series director by your car owner and
crew chief is another thing entirely.

And one point of clarification here as to something Mr. Stewart had to say
about the whole thing.  He said he was fined because he drove below the yellow
line.  Wrong!  He was black flagged for driving below the yellow line.  He was
penalized with the loss of twenty spots because he chose to ignore the black
flag.  He was fined and had his probation extended (big fat hairy deal)
because he went toe-to-toe with Gary Nelson outside the NASCAR trailer,
letting the entire world watch the whole thing on television.

That’s a load of bull.  He was penalized for going below the yellow line
because he didn’t obey the penalty (black flag) at the time of the race.  If
he had come in for the black flag he would have been in the same place so he
was just assessed the same penalty.

I listened as well and he did state the obvious reason why he went below the
yellow. "Because in a race you do have concerns for your fellow drivers and I
didn’t want to put Johnny and 20 other drivers in a dangerous situation." Which I
can agree with if your going 190 at Daytona. Getting forced down, concern for
other drivers, trying to win race, the rules all went through his head in a
fraction of that second. Tough call.

Also, what Stewart said that NASCAR didn’t have a problem with him contesting the
penalty but the fine and probation reflected that he did it outside the trailer
and not inside the trailer. But he still would of been fined for smacking
Mulhern’s (Eric: a reporter) tape recorder anyways.

I have to admit it, in his comments on the war wagon…
I agreed with the part about what is NASCAR saying he
should have wrecked everyone because in their eyes it
was the right thing to do… ‘seems something is wrong…
one of those grey areas… he also said basically he should
have waited until he got in the trailer to do what he had
to do in speaking his mind… still dislike him though…

DE kept his cool off track.

I don’t think he ever assaulted a reporter.

He somehow earned the other drivers’ respect even
though he punted them every chance he got DURING
the race.  I don’t know how he did that.  Tony Stewart
could learn a lot from DE.

    Right.

Actually, I should have worded my post more carefully still.

I personally don’t ***REMEMBER*** DE getting fined for post-race
or off-track shenanigans.  I’m not saying he didn’t.  The way I
remember him is aggressive on track and cool off-track
(even if he had reason to steam).

The fact is reporters new to stay out of DE’s face. They will learn this
about Tony too. Sure he is young and that may have something to do with it.
Tony will be around for a long time to come and that should give those
knucklhead reporters enough time to learn to give Tony his space when he
    wants it…..

LOL!! This just broke me up. Dale could and would just freeze a reporter
with a "look"! He once told me that sometimes this was a great way to just
avoid talking and wasn’t even angry but by giving the "look" they would
clear a path! DE was really something else and I miss the guy.

i was not going to post this but this thing keeps popping up …..dale
was fined very heavily back in 87 at charlotte for ramming G. bodine’s
car in the garage area ….this was the same race that inspired that
death threat letter….he was almost banned from racing there and had to
    apologize for his actions

Giving the evil eye is OK.

    Battery is not OK.

Thanks for setting the record straight.

I wasn’t paying close enough attention in ’87.

Clearly, DE learned from his mistakes.

    I hope TS does, too.
