Stewart vs Labonte

ON the NBC coverage, we heard about Labonte being enraged about being
dinged by Stewart at the end of the race – when Tony wouldn’t give up
the inside line on turns 3 & 4 after his pit stop and slid up into the
18…

I noticed how much Tony was apologizing when on camera.

Excite News actually had a quote from the in-car radio..

Apparently, Bobby Labonte said to Jimmy Makar:

"That little (expletive) better run off to Ray Evernham before I get
my hands on him."

I wonder how long this will play out or if Bobby’s just got to cool
down?  I know that Joe Gibbs in the NBC booth said he was VERY nervous
with all that going on..

20 move on the inside was pushing 18 out of the win and the 18 knew it. I
believe NBC wanted to add some excitement by saying this was a big deal
(MAYBE TOJOE GIBBS) but it was only a pass and was not anymore than any
driver would have done. I thought it was a good move compared to the way
    some others have won lately.

I’m with Stewart on this one.  Looked to me like Labonte could have
given him a little more room going into the turns.  Stewart would
need a couple of laps to get his tires hot for premium traction.
Seems to me Stewart had the right to race BL hard–DJ hadn’t fallen
back far enough to lose the Cup, and TS was racing for the prize
money, Cup standings, and the record books, too.  If TL had backed
off on the straightaway, he could have hung on TS’s tail through
the turns up until the end of the race.  He hung himself out to
dry by trying to make the pass on the outside.

He may have become a little perturbed by the incident, as most drivers would
have in the same situation.  However, Bobby has been around long enough to
know, and admit in the post race interview, that it was simply two good race
car drivers going for one spot on the track and he came out on the losing end.
Just because he’s been around a lot longer than Tony is no reason to expect
that Tony is going to back off just because "my senior team member" should get
this spot.  I loved it.  It was the most exciting ten seconds of the race.  As
a matter of fact, it was the ONLY exciting ten seconds of the race, unless of
course you were sitting in Kenny Wallaces’ seat.

Has no reason to apology.  He had a bumper up under Bobby the entire length of
the backstretch and had no reason to feel he should back off.  Even Bobby has
admitted to trying to squeeze Tony down low and get him to back off.  Tony
didn’t.  If I were a car owner and one of my drivers backed off in that
situation when a win is dangling right out there to be grabbed, I’d have a
little talk with him in the trailer afterwards.  Of course, I’m sure Joe had a
talk with Tony and Bobby after the race that went something like, "Okay you
two, learn to play nice together.  Now kiss and make up."

I’m sure Joe was just more nervous about seeing two of his cars end up in the
wall instead of Victory Lane.  How many car owners are there out there right
now that can say they can legitimately put two cars in first and second week
in and week out?  Maybe Bill Davis next year but, we’ll have to wait and see
if Blaney is good enough to race the Cup.  Even Rousch has trouble doing this
on a consistent basis.  Maybe he should hire Ward Burton away from Bill Davis
and then let the brothers slug it out each week.  "Basically I’m mad as hell!
I’m just not sure who I’m mad at!"
