I don’t recall seeing or hearing about him in quite a few races. Is he out of
racing or what? thanks, Diana

I haven’t seen or heard anything about him latley either. He’s 58 now and I
guess it’s probably close to retirement for him. We’ll have to see what
surfaces about him in the next few months if anything comes up at all. I
looked around on all the racing sights and couldn’t find any info about what
he’s doing or where’s he’s going.
Didn’t he try to make the Miami race?or was it Atlanta? He tried to make one
of the last 2 WC races.
His career stats are theoretically available at:
http://www.nascar.com/winstoncup/drivers/ShepM01/careerstats.html
I don’t know how accurate the stats are.
4 wins in 470 races.
0 races listed in 1998.
1 race listed in 1999–Dura Lube/KMart 400, finished 32nd.
His bio on nascar.com talks only about him seeking rides
in 1998, with no steady seat back then.
Last win in 1993.
With all the new guys moving up, I kind of doubt that he’ll
get any rides in 2000. I’d say he’s pretty much a known
quantity.

I don’t know where he is either, but Morgan would be a good man to have
in most garages. Among drivers he was always one of the best, if not the
best chassis men around. If I was an owner (with adequate bucks) I’d
hire him just to teach my driver how to relate his car’s condition to
the crew chief.
Ol’ Morgan has had a bit of tough luck since the ’96 season, when he started
the year in the 75 for BMR and then went to the 1 for Leo Jackson in ’97.
During the’ 97 season he drove for the 1 car, the 77 car when they parted
ways with Bobby Hillin, back to the 1 and lost his ride when Leo closed up
shop. Morgan drove in ’98 for the Circuit City 8 car in the June Michigan
race and then the Stavola Brother closed up their shop. The Stavola team
tried again to field a Cup car at the ’98 season ending NAPA 500 with
Morgan at the wheel and Nokia on the paint, but a great run was ended by
another Jeff Gordon-don’t-care-if-the-little-guy-gets-wrecked move between
turns 1 & 2 near the end of the rain shorted race. Morgan has tried a couple
of time this year, at the fall Charlotte race in the 05 Wendys Pontiac and
with the same car at Atlanta this past weekend. Atlanta is where Morgan has
had his best runs including a win or two. In fact the ’97 spring Atlanta
race in the 1 he nearly won the race. Morgan is has been very busy with his
charity work, and has a big Christmas Charity Drive every year.
