It’s a bit of a throwback to the old days – his car owner, Thee Dixon (an African
American, for those who’re looking for diversity in NASCAR) apparently just likes
racing, so he bought a couple of old Roush cars.  Carl works for him, and works
on the race cars on the side.  Every so often they get a car in running shape, and
Dixon has the spare cash to buy a motor, so they try to make a race (Carl himself
driving the transporter to whereever).  I think they mostly do it for the fun of it.

Sold would be more accurate.  Apparently they lucked into a good setup and
surprised everyone with a very creditable run.  DW was in the midst of his "what
do you mean I can’t take the past champions provisional 27 times" blues, and
was way off the pace in qualifying.  So Carter basically bought Carl’s position.
As it happened, DW continued to be way off the pace in the race, about half way
thru he gave up and let Carl finish the race, which he did passably well.  All in all,
not one of the shining moments for DW’s career.

It did establish Carl as the ultimate underdog, however.

that he raced in two races last year and that when he qualified for the
World 600 at Charlotte last year he promptly gave the ride to DW (#66

Yep, EEl river made the race… On a provisional, starting 43rd.  Driver and
crew did not make the difference this week, it was the provisional gods.  If
Andy Houston hadn’t skipped, the McDonald’s car would have been in there
instead. (I read it on Jayski).  However, skipping the two races will have
dropped Houston’s team in the owner’s standings to the point where even Eel
River has a chance of passing them (Mast has to finish 34th or better).

It amazes me that a team that has attempted every race this season is sitting
1756 points back, though when you realize that of the 19 attempts they only got
into 12 races, it makes more sense.

I think Carl might have some potential, but he’s never going to get anywhere
trying to make two or three races a year.  You can’t improve when your whole
years practice consists of 3 fridays and 3 qualifying laps.

44 entries, and when the 36 plus provisional starters don’t fill the field,
they take more on time to fill the field.  It would be a good race to try
getting in even if your entry is late…

This means that only the slowest car(s?) without a provisional will be going
home this week.  Then again, there are only 3 cars that Jayski shows without
provisionals, the #4, 7, and 14.  I’d guess that the #4 would be fastest of the
three, but only one lap of Pocono allows for just about anything to happen.

Sort of a toss-up which of the teams goes home, but Eel River will have a
provisional to use, unless some of those teams make it on speed and Rick Mast
doesn’t!
