I doubt he would have been that much slower in race trim. More than likely
he qualified using the motor he was going to race, which would make him
much slower in qualifying but not for the race. It is a shame that
Haas-Carter did not help him with a good engine. Maybe they have already
payed him back for the time he let DW drive the #85 last year.

In article <3b6209c2.508443...@enews.newsguy.com>, igop...@ix.netcom.com

- Hide quoted text -- Show quoted text -
(John McCoy) wrote:
>On Fri, 27 Jul 2001 06:43:34 CST, de...@bright.net (Deven Atkinson) wrote:

>>In article <qus0mtcj4qq64s2dtb3oqichqe7kagn...@4ax.com>, E...@Troldahl.com
> wrote:
>>>In rec.autos.sport.nascar.moderated Draft <Dr...@bestweb.net> wrote:

>>>>Now that they are hiring it's third driver for the year.
>>>Now that they are hiring it’s third driver for the year. What would you
>>>think if all three drivers were’t able to qualify into the starting
>>>field after 7 consecutive tries. Could it be possibly the cars and not
>>>the drivers? I hope kenny is laughing now.

>>According to Jayski, it will be hard to miss the field. Again, there are only
>>44 entries, and when the 36 plus provisional starters don’t fill the field,
>>they take more on time to fill the field. It would be a good race to try
>>getting in even if your entry is late…

>[snip] Rumor is Carl Long will be doing just this.

Pity for Carl the 3 guys with no provisionals left all made the show on time.
Altho, given how slow he was, it’s good for the rest of the field he wasn’t in
the show. They really don’t need to have one car running 5mph slower than
everyone else.

I think Carl might have some potential, but he’s never going to get anywhere
trying to make two or three races a year. You can’t improve when your whole
years practice consists of 3 fridays and 3 qualifying laps.
