Read on Jayski’s that it was a strong rumor that Steve Hmiel would be
working for Dale Earnhardt Inc in some capacity. Speculation on my
part…could this mean as team manager for Park and/or Dale Jr, in Cup
teams? We know the plan is bring DE Jr. up to Cup racing. Also wondering
what with Park’s lack of good finishes how secure his position is. I
believe Dale Sr. is a strong supporter of Park. It was he after all who
sought out Park for the ride. How about some thoughts from others about
this.

Rumor Hmiel To DE Inc
re: …If I ran Nascar
You folks don’t think big enough…
The first 10 things *I’d* do if I ran NASCAR:
1) Quit my other jobs
2) Buy a Harley
3) Buy a motorhome
4) Buy a house on Lake Norman
5) Add 2 more WC night races at Bristol to the schedule
6) Buy Cherokee Speedway (a 1/2 mile dirt track)and add 2 WC races there
7) Invite Dale and Teresa over for dinner
Make it part of the contracts with the tracks that they have to provide
a fully furnished hospitality tent free of charge at each race for rasner
reunions
9) Make ‘em let me drive some during Happy Hour
10) Even the competition by making JG drive with one hand tied behind his back
Yeah, that’s the ticket…

Mr. Roush
Count me as one of the people that were PO’d at Jack, but the man made
an apology better than Clinton. ( i am sorry way after the fact) It
was a very unusual thing I understand. I do hope he understands that
firing such a good manager is probably the worst thing he could have
done. JACK! if you are listening…. we do like your drivers a lot.
Please don’t drag Mark Martin or Jeff Burton into your dribble( and I
don’t like Burton!). Rephrase……..I don’t like Burton’s crying. I
have been to Cup races this year (5) and I did get tired of the
crying. 13 weeks ago I almost hated Krusty:) different team….but
after his comments about Gordon (please see any motorsports news
articles in the past 5 weeks for quotes), I respect the man. He knows
his competition and is ready to fight the right way. I think Krusty
might win this weekend (fair and square) and that would be OK by me!
Sorry I rambled on but I LOVE MY SPORT… no matter who’s the man!
Jack…… just say I’m sorry.

Awesome Bill
I would like opinions about Bill Elliot, he’s not my favorite driver but I
like him and would like to see him running more competitive. Any thoughts
on why he’s not in the top 5 much anymore? I know he has had a lot on his
shoulders the last few years. Any comments welcomed. To anyone going to
Richmond, Enjoy the races.

After reading about 24 hours worth of posts, I thought I would add my
2 cents. I was at Darlington so have not seen/heard everything that
was on ESPN. Just watched the race and listened on the radio
1) Sandbagging…it isn’t illegal. In almost every sport,
particularly endurance sports (and racing 500 miles is an endurance
sport, for the car and the driver, just ask Mark Martin why he works
out religiously; of course the Lazy-Boy jockeys out there probably
wouldn’t understand this), pacing yourself is usually one key to
victory. Save the engine, the tires and the driver for the final 100
miles/laps. How many times this year has a driver said that he wants
to be in a position to race for the win in the final 100 miles or
laps. Do you ever see a marathon runner take off and try to leave the
entire field in the first 5 miles (or even 10 miles)…I don’t think
so, but that’s not sandbagging.
2) Conspiracies/WWF/NASCAR favorites, etc…Martin starts having
engine problems. It was obvious at the race that he was off the pace
before MRN reported the engine miss. MRN reports that #6 team is
getting spark plugs and wires ready for a change but are hoping for a
caution. Boom, yellow flag for debris on the track. Now if I was a
Martin-hater (I’m not, I think he is as fine a person as there is on
the circuit, shame he works for Jack Roush), I would say NASCAR was
trying to help him out. I was sitting outside of turn 2 and did see
the track crews stop and pick up two items from the track, couldn’t
see what they were though but they were close to the racing groove. So
I guess it was probably legitimate. Not like the cans and bottles
that were thrown on the track (landed well below the groove) inside
the last 20 laps, I wished I had seen who did it so I could turn them
in to security. We will all eventually suffer for idiots like that
one day. However, I had mixed feelings about blowing off the track,
that’s part of the racing conditions at Darlington and maybe they
should have left it alone…not real important though; only gave
Martin some extra time to try to fix his problem although it didn’t
help, also gave the drivers a break which may have been NASCAR’s
thinking with the heat as bad as it was.
3) Darlington-Labor Day…that is one really hot race track. I was
sitting in Brasington, not the world’s best view, but at least it was
in the shade and it was still hot. I live down here and it was about
as hot as it gets on Sunday, although last week would have been worse.
The drivers have to be in top condition to continue to function in
those conditions. I race bicycles down here (and promoted the Pee Dee
Classic Races last week) and working in this heat and humidity takes a
lot out of you. There was one death at the track, a woman in the
infield had an apparent heart attack. We feel for her family.
4) Conclusion…All in all I think the 24 team just has it all
together right now. Evernham is able to control Gordon and keep him
focused, understand Gordon’s requirements in a car and make the calls
to get the car working right. And Gordon is able to communicate with
Evernham exactly what the car is doing and take the set-up he is given
and get the maximum performance out of it. It is a team effort. The
other teams are just going to have to keep working harder. And I’m
sure it is hard work. My impressions are that no one probably demands
more of their crew than Evernham. I’m sure most of you have read
about his "work-a-holic" habits and I think he demands similar
dedication from his crew. I doubt they have too many 40 hour work
weeks. That could be why they have traditionally been weak in the
final races of the season…they may get burnt out. I guess we’ll
see.
5) My predictions…Gordon wins "only" 3 more races; probably Dover,
Charlotte and Rockingham (their restricter plate program is still not
on top), and the Winston Cup Championship (not exactly going out a
limb here …huh).

A good article on this can be found at

Point of interest for comparison: Hendrick Racing has 13 engineers working on
R & D. Junie Dunleavy had a college student working co-op during the summer,
but she’s back in school now. :(

Is Jeff Gordon Sandbagging?????
I’ve got a question for anyone out there who has the idea that Jeff might be
sandbagging as Jack Roush has claimed. Why would JG act like he has a less
than perfect car all day and then at the end of the race decide to pull the
race out of his tuckus. It makes no sense to me when before this week the
points standings were so close that he would give up 5 points to other
drivers for leading the most laps and not take them himself if his car was
running well.
Just a thought
